What Is Scrambling?

There are climbers and there are hikers. But what if you are a hiker and you like to get out on those rocks a bit too? That’s what scrambling is about. Scrambling is just climbing without technical gear. Preferably you should do this on hills and cliffs that really don’t require safety gear. It also helps to keep your pack weight down if you plan on scrambling. A large pack can throw you around some, and you don’t want to lose your balance on top of a boulder. Hiking boots may be preferred by many, but I like running shoes for running around on rocky surfaces. They grip better and leave me less tired than boots. Others will tell you that you need the hiking boots for ankle support, but weak ankles may be the actual problem, and that can be solved through exercise.
