Barrel and Pincushion distortion are problems that are the result of a camera lens distorting the image. If you’re just making quick snapshots this may not be an issue, but if you’re creating photographs for a magazine or book, it’s definitely an issue, in my opinion. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen so-called quality magazines where this issue hasn’t been addressed, and it’s obvious in the images. Needless to say, my opinion of the publication tends to drop as a result. Still, it’s relatively easy to fix. There are two main options, to use the tools that come with PHOTO-PAINT (read – labour intensive), or to use plug-ins. I recommend the PhotoFixLens plug-in from Humansoftware. It does a great job and more importantly, you can save the settings for future use.
