Zoom lens overview

Zoom lenses are camera lenses that are designed to focus on objects at different distances – sometimes a considerable distance away. They are available for film cameras and usually come built in to digital photographic equipment. Zoom technology works mainly by varying the focal length of the camera lens – by changing the distance from the focus to the main lens. A series of lenses inside the camera usually assists in magnifying and focusing on the desired point in space.

The amount of possible variation in the focal length determines the camera’s overall ‘zoom.’ For example, if you can choose a focal length of anywhere from 100mm to 600mm, the camera’s zoom is said be 6x or 6:1. The larger the zoom, the farther away you can take good, clear pictures. Digital cameras can have up to a 30:1 zoom in regular, commercial types, and as high as 100:1 in specialized zoom lenses such as those on TV cameras.
