Statistically, the risk of developing prostate cancer his higher in men of African-American descent than it is in the general population. In a case involving an African-American male, his primary care physician was treating him for several issues that included issues with the prostate. The physician neither conducted routine prostate cancer screening while the African-American male patient was asymptomatic. The physician also did not schedule any tests to determine whether the prostate issues were the result of cancer and did not refer the patient to a specialist. It took until the man reached the age of 52 and he himself requested routine screening that he was finally diagnosed. He requested to be screened after reading an ad in the local paper that dealt with the benefits of prostate cancer screening. By the time he was diagnosed he had advanced prostate cancer meaning it was too late for treatment that could eliminate the cancer. The law firm handling this case reported it settled for $750,000.
