One fifth of the population can have tinnitus, a condition characterized by ringing in the ears due to dysfunction with the auditory system. Most cases of tinnitus are subjective, meaning there is no single identifiable sound source. Accordingly, environmental factors such as exposure to excessively loud noise can cause subjective tinnitus. Meanwhile, objective tinnitus occurs when there is an identifiable sound source, inside or outside the auditory system, which the physician can detect. Various options to treat and clear tinnitus are available, although there is no one standard treatment available for all cases of tinnitus.Generally, patients are treated with not one but a combination of many treatment options.
