Bunions are an enlargement of the big toe joint of the foot. It is most often caused by inadequate fitting footwear. Not surprisingly it is much more common in females because of the shoes that they wear. As the shoe push the big toe over towards the lesser toes, the side of the big toe joint becomes more prominent. This prominence is pushed on by the shoe and creates a number of other changes that become painful. The only way to make bunions go away is with surgery. There is still plenty that can be done for them without surgery but they do not make it go away.
