I was happy to go out and buy some envelopes and stamps for my wife, because that was easier than trying to make the envelopes. As a history professor I was well aware that hand made envelopes was all that was available before 1845 in America, and I did not want to spend all day making over 200 envelopes by hand. I wish my ancestors had invested in envelopes back in the 19th century so I could inherit the business. By 1999 a top quality envelope-making machine cost in the neighborhood of one million dollars, and even if I only sold one machine, I would be comfortable for life.
